Will FRP Connectors React Chemically with Products of Different Materials?

FRP is a glass fiber composite material with excellent comprehensive properties and stable chemical properties. It does not react with metals in normal environments. However, metals are prone to electrochemical reactions in a high-humidity environment. Therefore, we recommend adding rubber gaskets between it and the metal.

Do FRP Connectors Undergo Creep?

Under long-term loading conditions, FRP components will undergo slight creep. However, we took this into account during the design process. We design FRP connectors according to their elasticity and the applied stress, ensuring that the deformation within 50 years is less than 1.6 times the initial value. This avoids potential safety hazards to your project caused by creep.

What Advantages Do FRP Connectors Have Compared to Aluminum-Magnesium Alloy Connectors?

Aluminum-magnesium alloys are also lightweight but have narrower adaptability. When exposed to carbon steel, they are easy to corrode electrochemically, leading to rusting.

The fatigue limit of aluminium-magnesium alloy is lower than that of FRP. Its connecting parts need to be designed to meet the fatigue limit to prevent crack formation under long-term loads. However, FRP has a stronger fatigue performance.

For environments with strong acids and alkalis, such as the salt spray environment and the rock and soil environment, we recommend FRP connectors made of vinyl resin. 

Traditional metal connectors can not cope with highly corrosive environments well. Vinyl materials have excellent chemical stability, which protects the FRP connectors from corrosion caused by salt fog and marine pollutants.

The salts and acids in the rock and soil have high corrosiveness and easily corrode the metal connectors, leading to anchoring failure. The natural corrosion resistance of FRP connectors ensures a long-term anchoring effect, thereby protecting the structure.

Overseas bridges withstand long-term exposure to sunlight. Prolonged ultraviolet radiation causes the resin in FRP to degrade, affecting the performance and mechanical strength of the FRP connectors.

For cross-sea bridges that are exposed to high-intensity ultraviolet rays for a long time, we recommend applying an anti-UV coating on the surface of the FRP connectors or adding UV absorbers to the resin raw materials.

The pultrusion process ensures the continuity of the fibers, allowing the load to be efficiently transferred along the fibers. The tensile strength and the load-bearing capacity per unit area of the pultruded FRP connectors are much higher than those of other processes.

Seismic Resistance Requirements

Buildings such as bridges and tunnels are prone to damage under impacts of strong earthquakes. FRP connectors made of impact-resistant resin absorb the energy of vibrations and prevent structural collapse.
